Pair arrested in Ludlow after hour-long chase

LUDLOW – Two people were arrested Tuesday after they fled from an Aroostook County deputy sheriff who stopped to question them.

Dennis Daly, 24, of Houlton has been charged with criminal trespassing and operating a motor vehicle after suspension of his driver’s license.

Mary Crandall, 20, of Smyrna has been charged with criminal trespassing, permitting unlawful use of a motor vehicle and violation of bail conditions.

Both remained late Tuesday afternoon in the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.

Sheriff’s Deputy Kristen Miller was driving on Ludlow Road at about 12:15 p.m. when she saw a car parked by the side of the road near a house that belonged to a New Hampshire couple, just past French Road.

No one was at the house, Miller said, and a cable was across the driveway. Miller said she saw Daly and Crandall walking toward the cable. When she stopped to ask them where they were going,

Daly and Crandall allegedly jumped over the cable and started to run away.

Miller said she ordered them to stop and subsequently pursued them about 30 yards into the woods. The woods got thicker and Daly and Crandall kept running, so Miller returned to her patrol vehicle and called for assistance.

Trooper Carman Lilley responded with his search dog and began to track the pair.

Trooper Greg Burns also arrived and eventually spotted Daly and Crandall crossing Interstate 95 near French Road. He ran after them and apprehended them both.

The pursuit lasted about an hour.

Miller said she did not know why Daly and Crandall fled, but she speculated that it was because both had suspended driver’s licenses and feared they would be arrested.
