Bestiality is wrong

The Bangor Daily News article, “Father pleads guilty in attack” (Dec. 7) left this reader outraged and disgusted. We know where the elder Mr. Buble will be spending time for his crime – what about Philip Buble? Where is his dog? With him, because torture can’t be proven.

Buble’s abuse of his dog happens for the same reason other abuse is perpetrated – because he can do it. Where is the justice for this poor creature who has no possible way of expressing informed consent? Clearly, the younger Buble has no right to abuse any animal in any way; to boast about it and of being the first “zoo” out of the closet is offensive to myself and others who truly care for and work on behalf of animals. Buble’s admitted behavior is called “bestiality”; having sex with animals is as despicable and criminal as rape or pedophilia is, because each is an abuse of power and-or authority.

The animal has no way to say “yes” or “no.” There is no principle or informed consent possible.

Bestiality is not illegal in Maine. It was taken off the books because people didn’t think this happens in Maine. This fact disgusts me as much as Buble’s behavior. All sorts of abuse happens in Maine, and it happens often. Another disgusting outcome of this news is the laughter from males I experienced when first learning of the situation: What a sad reason to run out of newspapers to sell. Readers, please call and-or write your legislators. Report animal abuse to your local animal control officer or to Animal Welfare in Augusta.
