Scallop dragger disabled; fisherman dead, 2 missing Divers search off Jonesport after life jackets found floating

JONESPORT – A scallop fisherman drowned Thursday afternoon and two others were missing after their boat became disabled in Chandler Bay.

The U.S. Coast Guard will resume a search today for the two fishermen.

It all began about 12:45 p.m., when the Coast Guard initially got the call, saying a scallop dragger was going down in Chandler Bay. The boat, The Little Raspy, was found quickly. It was behind Bar Island with its bow sticking out of the water, said Coast Guard Ensign Stephanie Cushman. Life jackets were found floating in the water.

An eight-hour search for the three scallop fishermen was conducted in the area between Bar and Ballast islands. In the early evening, divers for the Maine Marine Patrol cut open the hull of The Little Raspy but found no evidence of the crew. A body of one of the fisherman washed ashore and was found later in the evening. Identities of the victim and the other two fishermen weren’t immediately released.

Bad weather, 12-foot seas and visibility of 1 nautical mile hampered the search.

The dragger got in trouble about 23/4 miles from the Coast Guard’s Jonesport station, and the Guard’s 41-foot-by-22-foot rescue boat was on site, said Cushman.

The Guard had been alerted when a caller, whose identity was not released, reported talking by cell phone with one of the crew members as the boat began to sink.

The stern of the boat was submerged, and equipment, including the life jackets, could be seen on the water.

At 6 p.m. Maine Marine Patrol divers began trying to reach the vessel, which was drifting toward shore, Cushman said.

Members of the Jonesport community searched the shoreline during daylight hours. The location where the body of the dead fisherman was found wasn’t immediately available.

Additional Coast Guard resources participating in the search included Station Jonesport’s 47-foot search and rescue boat, the Coast Guard cutter Point Shannon, and an HH-60 helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod in Massachusetts.

Cushman said the identities of the crew members were not immediately released because the Guard was not sure whether all family members of the men had been notified.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
