Suspected killer flees arrest in Brunswick

BRUNSWICK – State and federal authorities are looking for a Brunswick restaurant owner who is suspected of killing her husband’s mistress nine years ago in California.

Sawan Navarat, 47, narrowly escaped arrest in Brunswick earlier this week. She is accused of shooting her husband’s mistress four times in the head with a .38-caliber gun in Los Angeles in 1991. Police said she has been on the run ever since.

Brunswick police tried to arrest her on a federal warrant Tuesday morning at The Thai Place, but she fled before they arrived. Police say they are considering her armed and dangerous. Navarat’s roommate, whose name was not released, was taken into custody Tuesday for allegedly helping Navarat escape, but has since been released.

Police describe her as being 5 feet tall, weighing 100 pounds and having a mole on her lower left chin area.

Kathryn Spellacy, the deputy U.S. warden in charge of the search for Navarat, did not return repeated calls seeking comment.
