SEARSPORT – A Searsport woman attending Tufts University in Massachusetts has been awarded a Fulbright grant to teach in Germany, the U.S. State Department and the J. William Fulbright Scholarship Board announced.

Melissa Latham is one of approximately 2,000 U.S. grantees who will travel abroad for the 2000-2001 academic year though the Fulbright program.

Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated unusual leadership potential in their fields.

Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then-Sen. J. William Fulbright of Arkansas, the program is designed to build mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and the rest of the world.
