PRESQUE ISLE – A Caribou man is facing a felony charge after allegedly smashing windows at the field offices of two members of Congress, two law offices and the former residence of a state legislator, police said Saturday.
Lance Kelley, 48, was arrested late Friday and charged with aggravated criminal mischief, a Class C crime.
In Presque Isle, Main Street offices damaged during the early Friday morning rampage were Harding’s Law Offices, Currier and Trask P.A. and U.S. Rep. John Baldacci’s field office.
In Caribou, windows and a door were smashed in Sen. Susan Collins’ office and windows were broken at a former residence of state Rep. Irvin Belanger, R-Caribou.
According to Detective Wayne Selfridge of the Presque Isle Police Department, Kelley’s arrest came as a result of a joint investigation by the Presque Isle and Caribou police departments.
Selfridge said there was no indication that the criminal mischief was politically motivated. The evidence also showed that the defendant allegedly did not intend to hurt anyone.
The detective declined to comment further on a possible motive for the destruction, which caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Kelley posted cash bail of $1,000 and was released, according to police. The defendant is scheduled to appear in Maine District Court on Jan. 11.
Other officers involved in the investigation were Paul Theriault and Bill Scull of the Presque Isle department and Keith Ouellette, Rick Beaulier and Bob Worley of the Caribou department.
