SKOWHEGAN – Friday, Dec. 29, is the final day Farm Service Agency field offices can accept applications for the Wool and Mohair Loss Assistance Program.
Farmers who sheared their livestock during the 1999 marketing year and are still in the business of producing and marketing agricultural products are eligible to receive 20 cents per pound for mohair.
WAMLAP participants are required to certify the amount of shorn wool or shorn mohair from live sheep or Angora goats. Greased wool or greased mohair from pelts or hides is not eligible for payment. The office also will need to know the number of animals shorn.
The livestock must have been owned by the producer for 30 days and shorn during the 1999 calendar year in the United States to be eligible.
The application is available at local FSA offices or can be downloaded from the Internet at http://www.fsa.usda.gov/dafp/psd/.
