This is a call to arms for the many who abhor Maine Public Radio’s trading in good music for more talk.

Music lovers have written probably the longest sustained series of complaints ever published in the Bangor Daily News. Yet there is still no sign of MPR relenting. More aggressive action is needed.

May I suggest e-mailing MPR at comments@mpbc.org. My e-mail reads: “Until more balanced programming is restored – specifically, a minimum of two hours of classical music weekday afternoons and the Met on Saturday – I shall withhold support of Maine Public Radio. I will also let my representatives in the Legislature know that I dislike spending tax dollars on cultural improvement.”

Use this text if you wish or if you find it too long-winded, compose your own. The important thing is to register our demands with those who control programming.

Forty-six percent of MPBS’ money comes from its audience and 19 percent from the state. We represent a very significant portion of that audience and we can have influence in Augusta. I don’t think public radio’s management can afford to write us off. Our chances are very good. United we have real leverage.
