BAR HARBOR – The Maine Sea Coast Missionary Society says it recently received $48,450 from the estate of Caroline E. Bruhn for the mission’s scholarship endowment.

The gift is the final distribution from a $400,000 bequest received in October of last year. Bruhn died at her home in Arizona in January 1999.

A summer resident of Southport, Bruhn was a longtime friend and supporter of the mission.

He had a particular interest in education and the mission’s scholarship program.

The Sea Coast Mission, through its educational endowment, awards scholarships to high school and college students with a demonstrated need who are pursuing degrees in four-year programs.

The society also provides assistance to people of all ages for other types of certification and accreditation.

It sends young people with special circumstances to a variety of camps and workshops.

In 2000, the mission awarded more than $44,000 to Maine children, students and adults.

In 2001, the mission plans to more than double its scholarship awards to a total of $100,000, increasing financial aid availability to more of Maine’s youth and adults as they continue their education.
