Vehicle donation helps transportation service

ELLSWORTH – A bright red 1989 Plymouth Sundance is making its rounds in Washington and Hancock counties these days, thanks to an anonymous donation to the Washington Hancock Community Agency transportation services division.

The five-seat vehicle will be used to help transport area people to medical and dental appointments.

It also will help transport those who are elderly, low-income or enrolled in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program.

Linda Belfiore, transportation director for WHCA, said the agency usually uses 15-passenger vans or 12-person handicapped-accessible buses. “It’s more economical for us to transport children and smaller numbers of people with the new car.”

Anyone is welcome to donate a vehicle to the WHCA transportation services division to help those who need transportation but do not have access to reliable means, other than through WHCA.

Volunteers also are needed. People who want to volunteer to drive others to medical appointments with private vehicles can receive 30 cents a mile reimbursement.

Donations also can be made to fund transportation for the elderly who are not covered by any other program.

Call Marcia at 664-2424, Ext. 409. To donate a vehicle, call (877) 374-8396.

TDD service is available at 546-7607.
