HOULTON – Police are investigating a burglary that occurred over the long holiday weekend at the main office of the Community Living Association on School Street.

The association operates a number of residential and training facilities in the town to provide assistance and training to people with physical and mental disabilities.

According to Staff Sgt.-Detective James Skehan of the Houlton Police Department, sometime between last Friday night after the office was closed and Monday night, someone forced open a door on the lower level of the building near Lawn Avenue, to gain entry into the two-story office.

File cabinets were damaged and some windows were broken. A small amount of change was taken during the burglary.

A member of the maintenance staff discovered the burglary early Tuesday morning.

Police also are investigating an attempted burglary at the New Horizons center in Market Square, a daytime life-skills facility operated by CLA.

Skehan said someone attempted to break the handle off a rear door to the facility.

He did not say if the two incidents might be related. He said police have “some stuff to work with,” for evidence at the School Street site.

Officers Carolyn Crandall and Vance Palmer also are investigating the incidents.
