BANGOR – Dig out those Halloween costumes, or the ball gown and tuxedo from some previous wedding, prom or stage play, because the Bangor Public Library is inviting people to come to the “Real Millennium Celebration and Masquerade Ball.”

The event is a family celebration of entertainment, food, games and a real masquerade ball under the library’s rotunda, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 30, on Harlow Street. Entrance for the event will be at the Children’s Room door.

The event is free, but tickets are recommended. They can be picked up before the event at the main checkout desk or at the Children’s Room desk.

The evening of festivities will have something for everyone, said spokeswoman Angelia Dow-Bernier, including dancing, live music, refreshments, a slew of favorite board games, a planetarium show, children’s games and crafts and a doll exhibit.

The “ballroom” will be on the top floor, with music provided by a DJ from Mid-Maine Entertainment.

The third-floor reading room will have tables set up for games such as checkers, chess, Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly for nondancers, or for those taking a break from a cha-cha, fox trot or tango.

Children’s and adult’s costumes will be judged at intervals throughout the evening by Bangor’s mayor and his wife, John and Lynda Rohman and by Frank and Jane Bragg of Bangor. Door prizes also will be announced at intervals.

People can sign up for door prizes when they enter at the children’s door, Dow-Bernier said.

In the Children’s Room there will be live country-style fiddle music as well as crafts tables set up for making a memento of the evening.

The craft items will be related to time and astronomy, Children’s Librarian Anne Mundy said.

“We also will have books from which to choose projects.”

Key Club members from John Bapst High School will be on hand throughout the evening to assist wherever necessary, Dow-Bernier said.

An exhibit of costumed Madame Alexander Dolls representing countries from around the world will be displayed in cases at the library’s stairwell gallery.

On the second floor there will be a show called “The Wonderful Sky,” by Northern Stars Planetarium. The show is produced by John Meader of Fairfield. There will be five shows, of 20 minutes each, every half hour beginning at 6:40 p.m.

Seating space is limited, accommodating about 30 people per show. Tickets for the event are free, but they must be picked up prior to Dec. 30.

People will not be admitted to the show on the night of the event without tickets, Dow-Bernier said, because of limited seating. Tickets may be obtained at either the Children’s Room desk or the main checkout desk prior to Dec. 30, based on availability.

The Jazzmen, a group of young musicians from the Bangor area, will provide music during the evening on the second level.
