DEDHAM – A Portsmouth, R.I., man was charged Wednesday evening with operating under the influence of intoxicants after he allegedly lost control of his car and crashed into an abandoned cottage on U.S. Route 1A.
According to police reports, Gerald S. Pacheco, 35, was traveling north on Route 1A just after 6 p.m. when he pulled into the oncoming lane of traffic to pass a car. Pacheco then quickly pulled ahead of the car, narrowly missing cars approaching him in the oncoming lane.
Pacheco reportedly lost control of his 1987 Ford pickup at that point, sliding off the road and through some small trees. His truck eventually came to rest against a small abandoned cottage.
Pacheco suffered some minor injuries to his face and chest and was taken to a Bangor hospital for treatment. He later was issued a summons for operating under the influence of intoxicants. The police report didn’t state Pacheco’s blood-alcohol content at the time of the accident.
Pacheco’s truck is considered a total loss. A court date has yet to be scheduled.
