SKOWHEGAN – Some Skowhegan residents are asking the Kennebec Valley Mental Health Agency to reconsider its plans to build an apartment building for mentally ill homeless people in their neighborhood.

The agency announced earlier this month that it is looking at buying two apartment buildings. The apartments would house six to eight homeless people with severe mental illnesses.

Opponents of the plan say having mentally ill people living in their neighborhood could be dangerous.

They also say they’re worried that an apartment building with mentally ill residents could make it difficult for other property owners to find tenants.
