Bangor police waded into the icy waters of the Kenduskeag Stream on Tuesday morning to recover a safe that was stolen Monday night from Mr. Paperback at Airport Mall.
Bangor police detective Lt. Tim Reid said it appeared the suspects in the case might have had access to the keys to the mall and, once inside, broke the glass door into the Mr. Paperback store.
The safe, which contained an undisclosed but “substantial” amount of cash, was taken, Reid said.
After interviewing some of those involved, police were led to the Kenduskeag Stream at the Bull’s-Eye Bridge on the Griffin Road, a short distance from Airport Mall. There, they quickly found the safe, which was near shore in a few feet of water.
Most of the cash was recovered, Reid said.
On Tuesday afternoon, 18-year-old Nelson Robles of Mitchell Street in Bangor was arrested and charged with burglary and felony theft. A 17-year-old Bangor boy also was arrested and charged with the same crimes. His name was not released because of his age.
Both teens were being held at Penobscot County Jail on Tuesday night. Reid said the juvenile probably would be transferred to the Northern Maine Juvenile Correctional Facility in Charleston.
Reid said the boys had managed to break into the bottom of the safe.
“It must have taken quite a bit of work,” he said.
Reid said the investigation into the burglary was continuing and he expects additional arrests.
Reid would not comment on how the youths were able to gain access to the keys to the mall, but said that would be part of the investigation.

Old Town police dispersed a loud party involving mostly underage drinkers early Monday morning, charging three people, including one man who took a confiscated beer keg from a police cruiser.
Called to 39 Union St. about 12:45 a.m., Old Town police officers could hear loud voices from inside, and could see, through a kitchen window, a silver and red keg in the kitchen, reported Officer Bobbie Pelletier. Despite a warning to those within not to move the keg, the keg disappeared from view. It turned up later in the bathroom, according to police reports.
No one claimed ownership of the keg and a 20-year-old woman who lives at the residence said it had been brought from another party. The beer keg was confiscated and placed in the back of Sgt. Michael Hashey’s cruiser.
Hashey was standing beside another cruiser nearby when he heard his car door open. Hashey ran back toward his cruiser and saw a man grab the keg and start to run off. Hashey caught up with the man near the rear corner of the building and arrested him. Hashey charged Jason D. Robinson, 20, of Pittsfield with burglary to a motor vehicle.
There had been a commotion inside the building as well, where police officers found that only two of the 12 people were of drinking age. One of the two was Damion Clark, 21, of Hartland, who police reported was intoxicated and exhibited mood swings.
Clark would tell police they were cool, then a short time later would become belligerent and scream and swear at them.
He continued to yell despite being given warnings to quiet down, and despite efforts by others to quiet him and usher him into another room. Several times he told Officer Pelletier, “I will knock you out,” according to police reports.
Pelletier arrested Clark, charging him with disorderly conduct. The resident of the apartment was identified as Meghan Jones, 20. She was charged with providing a place for minors to consume alcohol.

A couple who recently moved in together spent part of New Year’s Day in jail after Old Town police were sent to Abbott Street early Monday morning for a report of a fight in progress.
Police were called to 18 Abbott St. shortly after 3 a.m., where it was reported that two people had blood on their hands. On the porch outside 18 Abbott St., Officer Stephen Boyd found 23-year-old Donald J. Price Jr. of Dedham with his shirt torn and hanging around his waist. Price admitted to having been in a fight but had no idea whom he had been fighting with, Boyd reported.
Indian Island police Officer James Fearon showed up with 22-year-old Amanda Lavoie, telling Boyd that he had seen Lavoie assault Price. Lavoie, who recently moved in with Price, was arrested and charged with assault.
Price would join his live-in girlfriend in custody after reportedly taunting police and refusing to quiet down. Officer Chris Hashey reported that Price first taunted Boyd, then him, and became belligerent. He returned inside at 18 Abbott St., although a resident there told police that Price had initiated the fight earlier and that he was not wanted there.
Price was told to leave and did so, with a few parting expletives for police. A short time later, Hashey located Price hitchhiking on Lincoln Street, where he would not get out of the road. After warning Price not to hitchhike at night and to stay out of the road, Hashey drove off, only to have Price chase after him, yelling and screaming.
Price was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and with refusing to sign a summons.
