UMFK seeks topics for women’s conference

FORT KENT – The University of Maine at Fort Kent is looking to the community for suggestions on possible workshops for its second annual women’s conference, to be held in March.

The one-day event, which will focus on the theme “Clean Clothes and Dirty Linen: The Fabric of Women’s Lives,” will be open to the members of the campus community and the public.

Organizers are looking for ideas for panel discussions, group discussions, presentations of papers, dramatic readings, film or musical presentations and visual arts displays.

The themes may include topics having to do with the clean clothes movement, which protests the working conditions and wages of clothing workers in developing countries, and the significance of blue denim in the American culture.

Other ideas might include quilting as an expression of beliefs, or the pros and cons of disposable diapers, including impact on the environment.

The conference will be open to women and men of all ages, including college and high school students.

Proposals for workshop topics for the conference must be submitted prior to Feb. 2 to the UMFK human resources office. Mail suggestions to Women’s Conference Steering Committee, UMFK Human Resources Office, 25 Pleasant St., Fort Kent 04743. Faxes can be sent to 834-7843, or e-mail to: tamara@maine.edu.
