BREWER – Bangor High School senior right wing Bobby Leavitt is the man who fortifies the Rams’ top line.
He finishes his checks, digs out loose pucks in the corners, makes smart decisions, moves the puck well and backchecks efficiently.
He can also score goals as evidenced by his hat trick on Wednesday night that led the Rams to an impressive 8-1 triumph over a scrappy but youthful Brewer squad, which had 10 sophomores and a freshman among its top three lines and two sets of defensemen.
Leavitt said his hat trick felt “great.
“I’ll get a good night’s sleep tonight,” said Leavitt, whose hat trick was his first of the season.
He also said the Rams put together a quality performance.
“We got production from every line,” said Leavitt, who is on a line with freshman left wing Kevin Cobb and high-scoring senior center Justin Libbey, who each contributed three assists.
Libbey was shadowed effectively by Brewer sophomore defenseman-turned-right wing Ryan Largay.
Second-line sophomore left wing John Huhn scored what proved to be the game-winner and third-line freshman center Brian Lever had a pair of goals. Bangor, now 4-3, also received goals from senior defensemen Billy Baker and Tyson Schroder.
Baker had three assists to go with his goal for a career-high four-point game.
Freshman left wing Robbie Hayes scored for 3-4 Brewer and older brother A.J. assisted.
The Witches had the better of the scoring chances in the first period but it was the Rams who entered the intermission with a 2-0 lead on goals 1:05 apart by Leavitt and Huhn and a couple of solid stops by goalie Justin Climo.
Leavitt opened the scoring at the 9:08 mark as he broke down the right wing past a Witch defender, cut right to left across the top of the crease and tucked a backhander into the short side past Brewer junior goalie Rob Elliott.
“He cheated over to the far post,” said Leavitt.
Huhn made it 2-0 by finishing off a play involving Billy Baker and Kyle Baker. Huhn controlled the puck and then roofed a 12-foot wrister.
Schroder stunned the Witches by scoring just 28 seconds into the second period; Lever scored 3:20 later and the Rams, with nine seniors and juniors among their top 13 skaters, took control of the game with their superior size and strength.
Schroder scored with a low slapper from the left point just before Will Prescott was able to lift his stick.
“I heard Billy [Baker] yelling that a man was coming so I just tried to shoot it quickly. The far side seemed open all night,” said Schroder.
Matt Hurley and Billy Baker teamed up on Lever’s goal as he camped out at the far post and one-timed a Hurley pass into the short side..
Leavitt’s shorthanded goal expanded the lead as he held off a defenseman, cut across the top of the crease and jammed the puck between Elliott’s left skate and the post.
Hayes scored with an in-tight backhander but Climo stopped a Prescott breakaway soon afterward and Billy Baker scored with a screened snap shot from the right point over Elliott’s glove.
Lever and Leavitt added third-period goals.
