AUGUSTA- The Maine Alliance for Arts Education is seeking teen applicants for a summer music scholarship with the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute. The expenses-paid program will be from June 22 to July 16, in Washington, D.C.

Maine is one of 13 states to take part in the program, which is under the guidance of the Kennedy Center Education Department in Washington. The full scholarship program is open to a Maine student from grade 9 through college sophomore level (as of September 2001) who is seriously considering orchestral music as a career.

Gifted students of the following instruments are encouraged to apply: violin, viola, cello, string bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, harp, timpani and percussion.

Deadline for submission of an audition tape and application is Feb. 2. One student from Maine will be selected by mid-March. Application forms can be printed from the Alliance Web site at www.maineallforartsed.org, by contacting the Alliance at maae@acadia.net, or writing to P.O. Box 872, Augusta 04332-0872.
