Bangor Rams surge early, defeat John Bapst Smith, Frazier score 13 each

BANGOR – Alison Smith scored 13 first-half points Tuesday night to spark Bangor to a 39-12 lead en route a 63-54 Class A schoolgirl basketball victory over John Bapst at Red Barry Gym.

Smith left the game early in the third quarter with an ankle sprain. It’s unsure whether Smith will miss Bangor’s Friday game against Brewer, according to coach Tom Tennett.

Bangor was also without the services of starter Katherine Miller, who was sidelined with the flu. However, the Rams were bolstered by the return of senior guard Jlynn Frazier, who scored 13 points and notched five assists in approximately 16 minutes of action.

Frazier has recuperated from a knee injury and had not played since Dec. 22.

Sarah Michaud chipped in with nine points for the Rams and grabbed nine rebounds. Smith also had nine rebounds.

Meghan Sekera paced the Crusaders with 16 points, Stephanie Sockbeson added 11 and Christina Rich put in 10.

At Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Bobby Leavitt scored a pair of goals and Justin Libbey was credited with a clinching goal when Craig Franck’s slap shot glanced in off his leg with 2:20 left as Bangor won its third straight.

Kyle Baker had the other goal for 6-3 Bangor with Kevin Cobb, Josh Bennett and Franck notching assists. Justin Climo made 19 saves.

Chris Lyon and Mack Rogers scored for 5-4 Mount Ararat of Topsham. Ryan Atwood had an assist and Joe Lacey made 33 saves on 37 shots.

At Millar Arena in Houlton, Matt Michaud scored four goals and Nick Simon made 42 saves as the Minutemen avenged an early-season 9-1 setback to the Blackhawks.

Sean Jamison and Eric Richard had the other goals for 2-5 Stearns of Millinocket with Richard, Josh Moore, Drew Somers and Aaron Doody each collecting an assist.

At Old Town, the Brewer Witches made the most of their opportunities on the line, shooting 24-for-29 overall and 13-for-15 in the final quarter to pull away from the Indians.

Justin Archer scored 22 points to lead the Witches. Jon Bell hit eight of nine foul shots en route to 17 points and Trevor Killip had 16.

Shawn Kenniston took all nine of Old Town’s free throws, hitting eight, before finishing with 30 points. Andi Jackson had 12 points and Justin Robbins scored 10.
