BANGOR – Even with her birthday party in full swing, Alice Beaulieu refused to crack a smile.

“That’s wrong! I’m not that old!” said Beaulieu, 105, her mouth drawn into a thin, disapproving line.

Sitting beside Beaulieu during the Westgate Manor celebration on Tuesday, several of her longtime friends couldn’t help but laugh.

“She was upset on her 100th birthday, too, because she didn’t believe it,” said Joan Caron of Old Town, who remembered something else about the guest of honor.

“She never would tell her age,” Caron said.

Born Jan. 9, 1896, at Webster Island, Old Town, Beaulieu is considered to be the oldest resident in Bangor. “We wanted to make a big deal over her birthday,” said Cheryl Massey, activity director at Westgate Manor where Beaulieu has lived for about eight years.

The magnitude of Tuesday’s festivities wasn’t lost on Bangor Mayor John Rohman, who read a proclamation from the city, “recognizing and congratulating” Beaulieu.

“This is amazing! Can you imagine a life that’s spanned three centuries!” he said in an aside.

Meanwhile, as residents of the nursing facility joined in a chorus of “Happy Birthday,” Beaulieu sat placidly in her balloon-decorated wheelchair, sampling the fruit punch and cake that had been set before her.

Between bites, Beaulieu, who has been deaf for several years, patiently answered questions people put to her with a slate and marker.

Although she has been diagnosed with dementia and is unable to remember much about the past, her friends filled in some of the blanks.

Never marrying, Beaulieu held a couple of different jobs. As a teen-ager she was a clerk at a now defunct dry goods store in Old Town.

During the 1950s, she was a housemother at a University of Maine sorority.

Awarded the Boston Post Cane for Old Town in 1992, Beaulieu remained for as long as she could in the house where she spent her childhood.

While some facts were in dispute even among Beaulieu’s close friends, they heartily agreed on one point made by Kay MacEacharn of Old Town.

“She’s very feisty,” MacEacharn said.
