Car reported stolen found parked in lot

A resident at Dirigo Drive called Bangor police on Tuesday, Jan. 9, to report an unfamiliar vehicle parked in a lot between 34 and 40 Dirigo Drive. The car, a 1990 Chevrolet Cavalier, had been in the lot since late Monday night, according to the resident.

Bangor police Officer Myron Warner investigated the call about the vehicle, which earlier had been reported stolen by its owner, who lives on Third Street. The car was stolen between 7:30 p.m. Jan. 8 and 8:50 p.m. Jan. 9, according to Warner.

There was no damage and nothing was reported missing from the vehicle, which had been left parked, unlocked, with the keys and registration inside.

The owner of the vehicle was able to retrieve it at the location where it had been abandoned, at Dirigo Drive.

A 911 call late Monday afternoon brought Bangor police Officers Kevin MacLaren and Paul Colley to the corner of Cedar and Fourth streets to answer a call about an assault taking place between a man and woman. The two people reportedly were standing outside on the corner.

When they arrived at the scene, the two officers noticed two women sitting in a blue vehicle that was parked facing in the direction of Cedar Street.

Officer Colley approached the two people who were still standing at the corner. The man, Michael Ireland of 17 Fourth St., was questioned by Officer Colley to determine what had been happening between them. It was discovered that the woman with him was hearing-impaired.

When questioned about the reported assault, Ireland told MacLaren that he was “just playing, and that everything was OK.” MacLaren then asked Ireland what he meant by “playing.”

Colley then asked Ireland why the woman had snow on the side of her leg and questioned Ireland about how it got there. Ireland became upset, MacLaren stated, and began to raise his voice to the police officers.

At this time, Colley observed the same blue vehicle and its occupants, and believed they might have been the witnesses who called in the assault. MacLaren went to speak with the two women, who said they had been parked outside of 17 Fourth St. when they saw Ireland leave the building and spin the woman around and begin choking her.

The women said they saw Ireland hit her across the face. The woman then began to walk off when Ireland grabbed her by the arm and spun her around. He began to yell at her, the women said. It was at this time that one of the women called 911 on her cell phone.

MacLaren returned to where Colley was standing with Ireland and told him that, in fact, Ireland did assault the woman. Colley told MacLaren that Ireland had been making signs to the woman, so she wouldn’t respond to the police.

Based on additional information about Ireland from Bangor Police Dispatch, and because of Ireland’s past history with assault, MacLaren arrested him. Ireland will be in court on Tuesday.
