Van Buren woman faces assault charge

A Van Buren woman was arrested in Bangor early Friday morning after it was reported she broke into her former foster daughter’s apartment.

Wanda P. Deschaine, 31, was charged with burglary and assault after the incident at 147 Essex St., where her 17-year-old former foster daughter lives.

Deschaine’s former boyfriend, a 31-year-old man from Levant, said he and the 17-year-old had returned to the apartment about 12:15 a.m. and he heard a vehicle pull up and recognized Deschaine as the driver.

The man told Officer Chad Foley that he hid in the back of the apartment while Deschaine banged on the door, trying to get in.

Deschaine apparently entered by breaking a window in the door, then reaching in and unlocking the door. Inside, her former boyfriend confronted her and told her to get out, he told police. The man said that Deschaine pushed him and tried to get him to push or hit her back. She claimed that she was pregnant with his baby.

Deschaine denied pushing her former boyfriend.

A Millinocket man was arrested on a drunken driving charge Tuesday night after a two-vehicle collision in Old Town.

Joshua T. Bernier, 25, apparently was returning from an ice-fishing trip in Washington County and was passing through Old Town when his pickup truck hit a car at the intersection of Stillwater Avenue and Bennoch Road about 9:20 p.m.

Bernier was heading west on Stillwater Avenue and made a turn onto Bennoch Road too soon and hit a 1993 Saab 9000 driven by Craig Warren, 41, of Bangor who was heading east on Stillwater, reported Old Town police Officer Chris Hashey.

Warren and several witnesses reported that Bernier tried to drive off, but that they convinced him to stay until police arrived.

Bernier appeared intoxicated, with Hashey reporting that the Millinocket man was unsteady on his feet and that his speech was slurred and difficult to understand.

Hashey was able to make out comments from Bernier indicating that the Millinocket man had been ice fishing.

Bernier was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants and for failure to provide evidence of insurance. Hashey said that Bernier’s blood alcohol content registered 0.22 percent on the Intoxilyzer test, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent. This was Bernier’s second OUI arrest, according to police.
