Harmony woman chosen to head Girl Scout camp

BREWER – Pam Weinle Tower of Harmony has been named resident camp director at Camp Natarswi, the Girl Scout camp in Baxter State Park. Tower was the director of the camp from 1998 to 2000, and was the assistant director in 1997.

The resident camp program at Camp Natarswi begins July 1 and ends Aug. 11. Individual sessions are for one, two and four weeks. Girls who will be in grade three and above in the fall of 2001 are eligible to attend Camp Natarswi, regardless of whether they are Girl Scouts.

Camp programs focus on adventure and outdoor living skills. Canoe and kayak trips are taken on rivers in northern Maine, and climbs are done on Mount Katahdin and other nearby mountains.

In High Adventure, teen-age girls go to The Forks in western Maine for white-water rafting and rock-climbing activities.

Camp Natarswi has been a Girl Scout camp since 1936, making it one of the longest continuously operating Girl Scout camps in the country. Civilian Conservation Corps workers used the property while they built roads in Baxter State Park. After the CCC moved out, the Girl Scouts leased the property from Great Northern Paper Co. In 1975, the paper company deeded the property to the Scouts.

A 65th reunion of former campers and counselors will take place at the camp in August.

Abnaki Girl Scout Council serves nearly 7,000 girls yearly in kindergarten through grade 12 in six counties in central, eastern and northern Maine.
