AUGUSTA – Several hundred opponents of abortion gathered Saturday to mark the 28th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision and to reaffirm their resolve to reverse it.

Roman Catholic Bishop Joseph Gerry of the Diocese of Portland urged those in attendance “never to tire” in their efforts and to resist “an abortion culture” he linked to the high court’s 1973 ruling.

“This is not the time to waiver,” Gerry told an audience inside the St. Mary’s school gymnasium.

After a rally there, many of the anti-abortion activists traveled a few blocks to the State House to join a symbolic Hands Around the Capitol demonstration that is sponsored annually by the Maine Right to Life Committee.

Among those supporting Saturday’s demonstration was the Christian Civic League of Maine.
