Ehrin Johnson of Camden is among 12 George J. Mitchell Scholars announced Monday by the US.-Ireland Alliance, a nonprofit organization based in Washington.

The 12 Mitchell scholars were chosen in a nationwide competition among 200 applicants. The awards allow each student to spend a year at a university in Ireland or Northern Ireland, starting this fall. The awards are named in honor of George J. Mitchell, a former U.S. senator from Maine who mediated the Northern Ireland peace process.

Johnson is the only Maine recipient. The scholarships are awarded to people ages 18 to 30 who have shown intellectual distinction, leadership potential and commitment to community service. Johnson is listed as a student at Stanford University and Harvard Medical School. She will study at the University of Ulster.
