Hopkins lifts MDI past Orono

MOUNT DESERT – James Hopkins’ pull-up jumper on a drive to the foul line with 6.3 seconds left was the difference in the game as his Mount Desert Island Trojans edged the Red Riots 56-55 in schoolboy basketball action on Monday.

Daryl Watson’s potential game-tying shot at the buzzer rolled around and off the rim to end the game, in which the largest lead by either team was seven points (by Orono with four minutes left).

Hopkins led the Trojans with 16 points. Jesse Dyer and Blay Carr each scored 10.

Watson paced the Riots with 15 points, Jesse White added 12, and Eric Kempen scored 11.

At Rockland, after grabbing four total rebounds in the first half, the Rockland boys rebounded with a better effort in the second to key a come-from-behind victory over Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

Casey Kenniston paced the Tigers with 14 points, 11 in the second half. Greg Harjula also had 14 points while Todd Curtis added 12.

Mike Susi had 16 points and Andrew St. Clair added 11 for the Huskies.

Nick St. Louis led 2-12 Old Town with two goals.

Nick Simon stopped 41 of the 44 shots he faced for the Minutemen. Jason Karam and Jeff Turcotte combined to make 24 saves on 30 shots for the Indians.
