BREWER – Police arrested two people Monday afternoon and charged them with breaking into a Burr Street apartment and demanding money while brandishing a gun and hammer.
The two, Kelly Bryant, 20, and David Townsend, 18, were arrested at their Hampden residence at 2:45 p.m., 21/2 hours after they allegedly broke into the apartment in Brewer, reported Sgt. Perry Antone of the Brewer Police Department.
Townsend and Bryant entered the home by breaking down the back door, Antone said. The noise alerted the resident, who was preparing to take a shower. When she came out to investigate she was confronted by the two. One of them had a gun, the other a hammer. The woman, who knew both of them, was near a telephone and called police, Antone said.
Bryant and Townsend fled, but Antone said investigators knew what kind of car they were in and learned that they previously had lived in Calais but now were living in Hampden. Authorities kept an eye on the residence and after the two returned, Brewer Sgt. Jay Munson and Sgt. Scott Webber and Officer Ruth Duquette confronted the two and subsequently arrested them.
Antone said both are being charged with robbery, burglary and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon. They are scheduled to appear in Bangor District Court today at 1 p.m.
