Brewer man faces terrorizing charge Previous incident brought harassment count involving same woman

A Brewer man arrested last week for reportedly harassing an acquaintance was arrested Tuesday and charged with terrorizing the same woman.

Randy Berry, 50, also was charged with harassment and violation of bail conditions stemming from his repeated attempts to contact the woman and her mother, according to police.

Authorities had intended to arrest Berry on Monday night, but took him to Eastern Maine Medical Center for a mental evaluation after he appeared incoherent, reported Brewer police Officer Keith Emery.

Berry, who authorities reported has a history of suicide threats, spent the night at the Bangor hospital and was arrested upon his release Tuesday.

Berry had met the woman and wanted to pursue a relationship with her, but she didn’t share the sentiment, according to Emery, who said she was granted a harassment order against him in November. He violated that order last week and was arrested by Brewer police, Emery said.

On Monday, Berry kept calling the woman’s mother and in one of the phone conversations told her that he hadn’t harmed her daughter yet, but that he was going to, Emery said. Berry also contacted the woman but could only get out “I’m sorry,” before she hung up on him.

As part of his release from jail from his Jan. 18 arrest, Berry had bail conditions issued that he have no contact with the woman.

A motorist alerted Bangor police to a car straddling the island by the intersection of Odlin Road and Interstate 395 late Monday night.

That’s where Bangor police Officer Chad Foley reported finding the large white car about 11:40 p.m. as it backed down the small snowbank on the island and pulled into a nearby parking lot.

Foley also pulled into the lot. Approaching the car with Oklahoma plates, he asked why the man had driven up on the island.

Steven J. Strach, 44, explained that a large white truck came out of nowhere and scared him. Thick cigarette smoke came out of the open door while Strach further explained to Foley that not only didn’t he have the registration to the car, but that it had been 14 years since he had a license. Strach said he was in Bangor working as a framer.

Based on his observations and conversation with the motorist, Foley suspected that Strach was intoxicated. Foley reported that the motorist didn’t fare well on field sobriety tests, stopping the officer in the middle of one and telling him he couldn’t complete it.

Foley arrested Strach, charging him with operating a motor vehicle without a license and with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants. Strach’s blood alcohol content registered 0.12 percent, or 11/2 times the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Poor visibility because of the setting sun was being blamed for an accident on Stillwater Avenue in Old Town on Monday afternoon when a car struck a parked propane fuel truck.

Minor injuries were reported in the accident and no fuel was released. The 16-year-old motorist suffering a slight burn on her left arm from the air bag deploying and a small cut to the right hand, reported Old Town police Sgt. Travis Roy.

The girl’s car was demolished while the Irving propane truck had an estimated $1,000 in damage, although the tank was not ruptured.

The police and fire departments reduced traffic to one lane on Stillwater for about half an hour until they could assess the damage to the truck’s propane tank.

Roy said that smoke was coming from the car’s engine compartment, but it was determined to be a wiring problem.

Roy said that the truck was parked legally on a hill on the right side of the road about 3:30 p.m. and that the setting sun made for poor visibility, obstructing the view of the motorist who was heading west on Stillwater Avenue, approaching the intersection with North Brunswick Street.

The driver of the propane truck was outside the truck at the time of the accident, making a fuel delivery to a house.
