Hawks soar on Lane basket at buzzer

MOUNT DESERT – Ron Lane scored underneath off a Ryan Garland feed as time expired, lifting the Hermon Hawks to a 50-49 schoolboy basketball victory over Mount Desert Island on Friday night.

The Trojans had battled back from an eight-point deficit, riding their full-court pressure for a 10-0 scoring run and a 49-47 lead on two Greg Fellis free throws with 30 seconds left.

Hermon’s Joey Schacht made a foul shot to cut the deficit to one, but Mount Desert Island missed the front end of a bonus and the Hawks eventually called timeout with 4.8 seconds left to set up the winning shot.

Garland led Hermon with 15 points and Wayne Shaw scored 10.
