AUGUSTA – The Legislature’s State and Local Government Committee held a public hearing Monday about a proposal to establish an official state tartan.

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Norman Furgeson Jr., R-Hanover, would establish the Maine Dirigo Tartan as the official state tartan. It would include “azure for the state’s skies, royal blue for the state’s lakes and seas, dark green for the state’s forests and farms, and red for the bloodline of the state’s people.”

The committee will schedule a workshop to consider the bill.
