GREENVILLE – The Natural Resource Education Center of Maine will sponsor a field trip to view a winter deer habitat beginning at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, at the Katahdin tour boat parking lot. There will be a car pool to an area near the Kennebec River.
The hike, led by Doug Kane, an Inland Fisheries and Wildlife biologist, will be on snowshoes and take up to three hours.
Linda Koski, NREC secretary, said the group size would be limited to 20 people. Preregistration is required. Koski said those who don’t have snowshoes can be outfitted. Participants should dress warmly, in layers, and wear warm, comfortable boots and warm socks, and should bring a water bottle and a snack. The group will return to Greenville by 4:30 p.m.
Kane will lead the group to a deer yard to observe how deer survive in winter. As the snow deepens, the deer gather in deer yards where they can take advantage of sharing packed trails as they browse. This strategy for white-tailed deer is unique to northern Maine, according to Koski.
