FARMINGTON – Mt. Blue High School followed up its Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship wrestling win last week with a second straight Eastern Maine Class A title on Saturday.
Six of the eight wrestlers the Cougars of Farmington placed in the championship finals came away with wins, helping Mt. Blue put up 216.5 points to runnerup Oxford Hills of South Paris’ 173.
Leading the way for the Cougars were individual champs Scott Webber in the 112-pound weight class, Damian Osgood in 125, Ryan Hutchinson in 135, Dave Cook in 160, Matt Waite in 189 and Andy Harris, who won his second straight 275 title.
Osgood won 119 last year. Both Webber and Hutchinson were runners-up last year.
The Vikings of South Paris placed five in the championship finals, but only two came out with victories: Seth McAlister in 103 and Chris Denlinger in 119.
The other individual regional champions were Skowhegan’s Brandon Hamilton in 130 and Phil Hamilton in 171, Gardiner’s Elijah McKay (145 champ in 2000) in 152 and Warren Cote in 215, Cony of Augusta’s Brad Waugh in 140 and Morse of Bath’s Ben Goulette (140 champ last year) in 145.
Also turning in solid efforts were Rob Cameron of Brewer and Jeff Nickerson of Nokomis in Newport.
Cameron advanced to the championship round of the 275 pound class before being pinned by Harris of Mt. Blue at 2:59.
Nickerson, also a competitor in the 275 division, advanced to the consolation finals where he was pinned by Mount Ararat’s John Bursley in 1:38.
The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to next Saturday’s state championships at the Augusta Civic Center. The Classes A, B, and C finals are all at the ACC.
