Toney leads Tigers to OT win

EASTPORT – Ben Toney scored six of his 21 points in overtime to lead the Shead Tigers to a 71-68 schoolboy basketball victory over Machias on Saturday.

Larry Bowen contributed 15 points and six assists, Darrin Constant added 10 points, Toney also grabbed 14 rebounds, Ben Maloney had 10 assists, and Cliff Urquhart, whose driving shot at the buzzer sent the game into overtime, had 10 rebounds.

Jeff Copp and Jared Day led Machias, which hit several 3-pointers down the stretch to pull ahead, with 20 points apiece, Kevin Laughlin added 18, and Aaron Getchell 10.

Jake Hedstrom scored twice and assisted on another for the Red Riots, Will Toner and Nat Breece added a goal and an assist each, Pat Skall had a goal, and Mike Merritt picked up two assists.

Paul Pangburn made 19 saves on 22 shots.

Kevin Carton and Andrew Clark scored first-period goals to give the Black Hawks a 2-1 lead before Orono took charge. Ben Carton also scored, and Jeremy London had two assists. Goalie Brandon Carmichael stopped 26 of the 32 shots he faced.

Presque Isle 6, Winslow 4

At Northern Maine Forum in Presque Isle, Darren Carlisle’s three goals and two assists led Presque Isle over Winslow.

Andy Bealieu notched two goals and an assist for the 10-6 Wildcats and Ben Sirois also netted a goal and Tom Gregg, Anthony Bohovich, and Ryan Stevens each added assists. Goalie Joe Grenier made 17 saves on 21 shots.

Nick Burton, Jason Carter, Doug Dorval, and Chris Marcoux each put in a goal for the 7-8-1 Black Raiders while goalie Tim Cloutier stopped 19 of 25 shots.

At Sawyer Arena in Bangor, Bobby Leavitt paced Bangor to victory over Hampden with three goals and four assists.
