BANGOR – Bobby Leavitt and Justin Libbey each recorded a goal and an assist and Justin Climo racked up 39 saves Thursday night as the third-seeded Bangor Rams knocked off the No. 1 Waterville Panthers in an Eastern Maine Class A hockey showdown at Sawyer Arena.
Bangor (11-6) spotted Waterville (14-3) its only goal with seven seconds remaining in the first period on a defensive zone turnover when Zach Pelletier converted a Kyle McMorrow assist.
The Rams bounced back as Leavitt tied the game 50 seconds into the second period. He outskated a Waterville defender to the puck, lifted his stick and beat Panthers goalie Marc Dostie to the short side.
Bangor took the lead with 5:35 left in the game when Leavitt set up Justin Libbey for a goal. Billy Baker added an empty-net goal off a Libbey assist for the Rams.
Dostie finished with 21 saves for Waterville.
Orono 3, Gardiner 1
At Kennebec Ice Arena in Augusta, Derek Williams broke a scoreless tie with his third goal of the season 2:37 into the second period; defenseman Dustin Sleight scored what proved to be the game-winner just under five minutes later and Casey Hale kicked aside 38 shots as the Red Riots beat the Tigers in a battle of unbeatens.
Eric Gordon had the other goal for 16-0 Orono midway through the third period, his eighth, before Andy Nagy ruined Hale’s shutout bid with 1:53 left.
Williams was set up in front during a scramble by Nick Dwyer and beat Tiger goalie Ray Jean from in close.
Sleight made it 2-0 with his first goal of the season when he took a point-to-point pass from Travers Kurr and beat Jean with a slapshot from the right point. Jake Hedstrom also assisted on the Sleight goal.
Gordon’s insurance goal came off a Mike Merritt assist.
Nagy’s goal was set up by Jim Moore for 13-1-2 Gardiner.
Jean finished with 20 saves.
