Carver, McGeoghan gain honors

The University of Maine has honored two top senior student-athletes with the Dean Smith Awards.

Kristi Carver of Jonesport, a member of the volleyball team, and Phil McGeoghan of Feeding Hills, Mass., a football and track team member, were recipients of the award. The Dean Smith awards are given to seniors who exhibit exemplary academic and athletic achievement, leadership and character.

The award was first given in 1993 and is named for the former UMaine basketball player who was named the nation’s top scholar-athlete in 1990. The recipients were given the award during a ceremony at Wells Conference Center Sunday morning.

Carver, a landscape horticulture major, served as the captain of the volleyball team last fall. She carries a perfect 4.0 grade point average and was a UMaine scholar-athlete and a member of the America East All-Academic team. Carver was a member of the first UMaine volleyball team since 1983 after the university reclaimed the program before her junior year. She helped the team post a 12-18 mark as a senior.

McGeoghan, a marketing major, ranks fourth in career receiving yards, fifth in receptions and holds UMaine indoor and outdoor records in the high jump. He has won three America East and three New England high jump crowns and is president of the UMaine Student-Athlete Advisory Board.
