EAST MACHIAS – Miranda Copeland scored a layup and Nicole Stauffer made a free throw in the final eight seconds to help the No. 11 Washington Academy girls basketball team hold off No. 14 George Stevens Academy 49-46 Saturday in first-round action from the Eastern Maine Class C tournament.

Copeland finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for the Raiders. Diana Bourdeau chipped in with 12 points and Miranda Fergerson added 10.

Michala Bunten poured in a game-high 24 points for the Eagles of Blue Hill, including 18 in the second half. Jamie Wood added 13 points.

Morin stepped up his offense after Madawaska’s defense slowed Scott Bates, who scored 12 of his 15 points in the first half. Noah McPike finished with 10 points for the Howlers, including two free throws in the closing seconds to help secure the win.

Guy Michaud tossed in a game-high 23 points for Madawaska, which had a chance to go ahead in the last 30 seconds but missed the shot. Keith Cyr and B.J. Dufour added eight points each.
