UNE scraps immediate plans for expansion

BIDDEFORD – The University of New England has backed off a plan to expand its Biddeford campus, at least temporarily.

The school was slated to build a $15 million convention center within a shore land protection zone. It also had plans to build in a residential district.

Both proposals drew considerable opposition from neighbors.

“We felt the original master plan scared people,” said Steven Price, the university’s spokesman. “We got a lot of feedback. We heard what people are saying and we’re taking a look at it.”

Price said the university has decided that student housing is a more immediate need. He said expanding enrollment has forced the school to put building dormitories and classrooms first.

“Student housing is our number-one priority,” Price said.

He said the Biddeford campus has 300 dormitory rooms that are outdated and inadequate. The university hopes to renovate rooms and build another 300 rooms within the next few years, completing the first 200 rooms by fall 2002.

Without seeking special zoning, UNE will have to win piecemeal approval for its various projects, Price said.

Neighbors lauded the school for hearing their concerns, but withheld judgment until they see alternative plans.
