Bangor police charged Elbert “J.R.” Alston, 33, of Bangor with domestic assault after it was reported that he grabbed his live-in girlfriend by her hair and dragged her from the bed to the floor.
The woman told police Sunday that the incident occurred about 5 a.m. Saturday after Alston came home from work. She said that he was upset after finding out that she had a male friend over recently while he was away at work, something she said Alston had prohibited.
She said that she had been sleeping Saturday morning when Alston began yelling at her and grabbed her by the hair and pulled her out of bed and onto the floor. Every time she tried to get up, he would push her down, she told Officer Ed Potter. Alston told her to leave, but grabbed her pocketbook from her and removed $40 and a house key, according to a police report.
A 21-year-old woman who was there for at least part of the altercation said that Alston also kicked his girlfriend when she refused to let go of her purse.
The woman filed the assault report on Sunday, but said she hadn’t reported it the day before, even to a police officer who assisted her in removing clothing from the home because she was afraid of Alston.
When confronted about his girlfriend’s claims, Alston admitted to asking her to leave but said he didn’t touch her and that he hadn’t grabbed her purse.
He suggested to Potter that the officer talk to the woman who was there at the time, as she would confirm his story. Potter informed Alston that he had spoken to the woman and that she had confirmed his girlfriend’s story.
A report of an intoxicated man trying to drive a car sent a Bangor police officer to Third Street Sunday afternoon, where he found the car stuck in a snowbank in a driveway.
Two men, apparently neighbors, were trying to help extricate the car when Officer Dan Herrick arrived and told them he would handle it. Herrick could hear the sound of tires spinning in the snow.
The officer approached the driver, who was still inside the car, and noted that he could smell alcohol coming from inside and that the driver’s speech was slurred. Herrick reported that the driver, Ramon Rodriquez-Campos, 50, of Bangor, was unsteady on his feet when he stepped out of the car, so much so that the officer curtailed field sobriety tests, concerned that Rodriquez-Campos would fall and injure himself.
Rodriquez-Campos was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants.
His blood alcohol content registered 0.20 percent or 21/2 times the legal limit of 0.08 percent. A corrections officer at the Penobscot County Jail reported finding a small bag of marijuana in Rodriquez-Campos’ clothing and he was issued a civil summons for possession of a usable amount of marijuana.
