BANGOR – A Canadian man with a lengthy criminal record in his native country was sentenced to 43 months in prison Thursday after he entered the United States illegally last fall. He previously had been deported for an aggravated felony conviction.

Joseph Charbonneau, 47, was ordered to complete three years of supervised release after his prison term.

The sentencing took place at U.S. District Court in Bangor, with U.S. District Judge George Z. Singal presiding.

Indicted last October, Charbonneau had tried to cross the border at Fort Kent on Sept. 29, 2000. He pleaded guilty to the offense.

Charbonneau was deported Aug. 13, 1997, after it was discovered he had been convicted of an armed robbery in Moncton, New Brunswick.

Charbonneau was returned to jail where he has been held since his fall arrest.

He will be sent to a U.S. federal prison in the near future.
