Northeastern women, Drexel men win titles

ORONO – The Northeastern University women successfully defended their title while the Drexel University men won their first crown since 1993 at the America East Swimming and Diving Championships at Stanley M. Wallace pool Sunday.

The Northeastern women finished with 706 points followed by the University of Delaware (550), the University of New Hampshire (511), Towson University (473), Boston University (465), the University of Maine (423), Drexel University (264) and the University of Vermont (123).

The Drexel men totaled 809.50 points. Towson was second with 621, followed by Delaware (589), Boston University (495), New Hampshire (407), Maine (289.50) and Vermont (171).

Maine junior Krystal Fogler capped the three-day meet with another strong performance and was named America East Outstanding Swimmer. She totaled 57 points and won the 200 backstroke Sunday with a time of 2 minutes, 5.17 seconds.

Fogler was also a member of Maine’s 400 free relay team that set a school record with a time of 3:31.14 and finished second. Other team members included Griffin O’Connor, Kate Abbott, and Katrine Alcaide. The time beat last year’s America East record as did the first-place time turned in by Northeastern (3:30.43).

Also turning in a strong performance for the Black Bears was Alcaide, a freshman from Harpswell. She finished with 51 meet points and set a school record with her victory in the 100 free with a time of 52.64 seconds.

Jamie Cunningham, a sophomore from Bar Harbor, also enjoyed a fine meet for the Bears with 52 total points.

Delaware freshman Meghan Petry set an America East record in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:02.99.

Northeastern’s Roy Coates was named Women’s Swimming Coach for the second straight year and the Huskies’ Brad Snodgrass was the Women’s Diving Coach of the Year. Drexel’s Bruce Bronsdon and Larry May were named Men’s Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year, respectively.
