BOSTON – Angela Gingras anchored the 1,600-meter relay team Saturday for the victory which gave the Vermont women their first America East Indoor Track and Field Championship.
The Catamounts held off Boston University, scoring 1431/2 points to the Terriers’ 140. BU was runner-up in the last event.
It’s the first time in 12 years that a women’s team other than Northeastern or BU has won the crown.
Northeastern finished third with 109 points, followed by Maine 72, New Hampshire 47, Delaware 31, and Towson 151/2.
Gingras also won the 400 dash in 58.78 seconds, one of three individual champs for the Huskies.
BU’s Rachel Felton was named the outstanding performer as she won three events, the 500 (1:16.08), 1,000 (2:51.67), and mile (4:54.53).
Victoriya Rybalko posted the Black Bears’ only win when she leaped 19-foot-51/2 in the long jump.
Vanessa McGowan in the 500 (1:16.37), Julie Williams in the weight throw (48-31/4), and the 3,200 relay team (9:20.06) each recorded runner-up finishes.
The Northeastern men used depth to pick up 1291/2 points to earn its second straight win and eighth in 13 years.
BU took second with 103, Maine was third at 94 New Hampshire 871/2, Delaware 65, Towson 43, and Vermont 35.
Delaware’s Butch Patrick set a meet record in winning the long jump (24-31/2, breaking his own mark) and also won the 55 dash (6.38) to be named outstanding men’s performer.
Maine won four of the distance events.
Benjamin Ray (1:56.34) and Ryan Harkleroad (1:56.55) went 1-2 in the 800, Gabe Rivard won the mile (4:12.40) by .02 seconds, Joe Luchini cruised in the 3,000 (8:30.16), and the Bears won the 3,200 relay (7:57.65) by more than three seconds.
The Bears also received seconds from Kenneth Bettis in the 500 (1:05.51) and Derek Davis in the high jump (6-73/4).
NU’s Sherman Hart and BU’s Pete Schuder were named men’s co-Coaches of the Year, and Ed Kusiak of Vermont was selected women’s Coach of the Year.
