BANGOR – One day last week East Grand’s Tara Copley turned on a computer and heard the phrase, “You’ve got mail.” Or words to that effect.
The e-mail turned out to be a scouting report on their Eastern Maine Class D girls quarterfinal opponent, Van Buren.
“We didn’t know anything about them. Then a girl e-mailed [Copley] from Washburn. That’s where we got most of our information about them. And we went with it,” East Grand coach Renee Shain said.
Went with it indeed. In a tournament full of shocks, another was administered Monday morning when No. 7 East Grand of Danforth knocked off the previously unbeaten and second-seeded Van Buren Crusaders 46-40.
East Grand, now 12-9, moves on to meet a more familiar opponent, Shead of Eastport, in a 3:35 p.m. Thursday semifinal.
The Vikings came out firing, tossing up 3-point shots and jumped on the Crusaders, who were off to a slow start. Copley, who would finish with 12 points, and Mesha Whitney, who had 10, both connected on long-range shots early in the game. Sophomore Amanda Godley added 10 points for East Grand.
The Vikings led 20-8 after the first quarter and 28-16 at the half. Shain said she hardly recognized her own team.
“It shocked me just to see them throw [3-point shots] up and to keep doing it. Usually it’s just one [player] who is hitting the three. They all were hitting.”
Copley said the presence of 6-foot sophomore Michelle Parent forced the Vikings to shoot from the outside.
“We wanted to get inside but we were open, so we took the three-pointers,” Copley said.
Meanwhile, Van Buren coach Steve LaPierre looked in vain for signs that his team could shake off the rust of a two-week layoff between games. And despite a tremendous size advantage the Crusaders, 17-1, were unable to put together a run.
“We just didn’t make our shots. We must have missed 10 layups easy. I’m not a proponent of sitting out for two weeks. But this sure didn’t do us any good today,” LaPierre said.
Parent, a sophomore, had nine points, nine blocked shots and 11 offensive rebounds for the Crusaders. Sophomore Danielle Gagnon had 12 and Nicole Corbin added 11 points.
