Lavertu wins Class C giant slalom Madawaska took four of the top five positions in the Carrabasset event

Emily Lavertu of Madawaska won both runs to take the girls giant slalom crown in the State Class C Skiing Championships at Sugarloaf/USA in Carrabassett Valley on Monday.

Lavertu’s time of 1 minute, 50.69 seconds was more than a half-second better than teammate and runner-up Rosa Londono. Madawaska took four of the top five places.

Denny Mitchell of Falmouth won the boys giant slalom in 1:35.39. The top Eastern Maine skier was the fifth-place finish of Corey Hibbard of Valley High School in 1:42.49.

The girls from Mt. Blue High School in Farmington walked away with the first two events in the Class A championships at Lonesome Pine Trails in Fort Kent.

Monica Hedstrom took third in the giant slalom as the Cougars placed four skiers in the top 10 for a team score of 28 points. Stephanie Vaughan won the event with a two-run time of 1 minute, 33.24 seconds.

Leavitt of Turner was second among the teams with 59 points, followed by Mountain Valley of Rumford 76, Edward Little of Auburn 83, and Telstar of Bethel 106. Skowhegan was seventh at 131, Fort Kent next at 141, and Hampden 10th at 174.

Hannah Bogar’s victory in 21 minutes in the freestyle cross country sparked the Cougars as they placed six skiers among the first eight for 15 points as a team.

Leavitt was second again with 46, Edward Little third with 60, and Fort Kent fourth with 68. Hampden tied for seventh with 116.

On the boys side, Seth Hubbard’s victory in 17:30 paced Mt. Blue to the freestyle cross country win with 17 points. Edward Little was second with 49 points, followed by Leavitt 51, Telstar 58, and Fort Kent 72.

Tom Hamilton won the giant slalom to lead Edward Little to the team crown in that event with 48 points, with Oxford Hills second at 51, followed by Leavitt 66, Mt. Blue 70, and Fort Kent 72.

Competition in the remaining events continues Tuesday and Wednesday.
