BANGOR – The third-seeded Mattanawcook Academy girls basketball team found themselves staring at an 11-point deficit when the 11th-seeded Washington Academy Raiders caught them by surprise by all lining up in the backcourt before Diana Bourdeau snuck down the court to lay in Miranda Copeland’s inbounds pass. The Lynx were defending the wrong basket.

But the Lynx began running their offense the way it was supposed to be run and received 10 second-half points from Cassie Carver and eight more from Desirae Haines to rally for a 49-44 triumph in their Eastern Maine Class C quarterfinal at the Bangor Auditorium Monday.

The Lynx will take on Penquis of Milo in a 2:05 p.m. Friday semifinal. No. 2 Penquis beat No. 7 Dexter 53-34 in the late game.

“We dug deep and the shots started to fall for us in the second half,” said MA’s Haines. “We also started to rebound.”

Carver added, “We needed to slow things down and run our offense. And I had to calm down when I shot.”

She was four-for-five from the floor in the second half she managed just two first-half points on one-for-eight shooting from the floor.

The Lynx climbed back into the game thanks to a 17-7 run in the third quarter.

Kari Vance had five points during the spree while Haines, Carver and Brandi Rideout each had four.

The Lynx took their first lead since the first quarter with 3:52 left in the game when Carver hit a short baseline jumper and Haines sank two free throws to make it 40-39. Carver nailed a 10-footer from the right elbow to up the lead to three and, after WA phenom Miranda Copeland scored the Raiders’ first basket of the quarter to cut the lead to one, Carver fed Haines for an eight-foot jumper.

Diana Bourdeau’s 3-pointer tied it up with 1:30 left but Rideout’s free throw with 1:21 left gave MA the lead for good. Kate Head grabbed one of her five fourth-quarter rebounds following a WA miss and then sank a free throw.

Two Carver free throws with 31 seconds remaining all but sewed it up.

“We ran out of energy in the second half and we missed a lot of easy shots,” said Raider forward and captain Miranda Fergerson.

Haines finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the winners. Rideout and Carver had 12 points apiece and Rideout finished with five steals. Carver grabbed seven rebounds.

Head grabbed eight boards.

Copeland was exceptional for the Raiders with 23 points, including three threes, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Fergerson contributed 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

WA shots just 7-for-31 from the floor in the second half.
