Madawaska, Sacopee Valley, Mt. Blue and Oxford Hills were the big team winners as the state ski championships in Classes A and C continued into their second day Tuesday.
In the Class C meet at Sugarloaf/USA ski resort, the Madawaska girls and Sacopee Valley boys surged to first place in the alpine team totals, which don’t include the cross country race scores, after Tuesday’s slalom competition concluded.
In individual slalom competition, Chelsea Daigle and Bill Brogan – both of Falmouth – won the girls and boys slalom titles, respectively.
Daigle’s total time of 1:09.77 edged Madawaska’s Kristen Guerrette (1:12.01) by less than three seconds.
Falmouth’s Bill Brogan was first among boys with a time of 1:01.73 while Nathan St. Saviour of Sacopee Valley was second (1:01.80). Eric Larrabee from Central Aroostook of Mars Hill was seventh (1:10.32).
Madawaska’s boys team currently sits in fourth place, 92 points behind Sacopee.
At Lonesome Pine Trails, the Mt. Blue girls increased their sizeable lead and the Oxford Hills boys moved up a notch from second place after the second day of the Class A competition.
Teams competed in the slalom on Tuesday and will cap the three-day meet with cross country classical races on Wednesday. Monday’s events were the giant slalom and the cross country freestyle.
The Cougars of Farmington tucked four skiers into the top 10 in the slalom. Courtney Clark was fourth with a two-run combined time of 1 minute, 3.99 seconds. Teammates Emma Carlson (fourth, 1:05.04), Jessica Bouchard (eighth, 1:07.98) and Monica Hedstrom (ninth, 1:08.59) combined to account for the team’s 24-point score.
Stephanie Vaughn of Telstar posted the day’s fastest combined time by almost two seconds. Her two runs totaled 1:01.31.
Gretchen Vaughn of Leavitt was second in 1:03.30.
Mountain Valley of Rumford tallied the day’s second-lowest score with a 65. That effort moved them into third place with a two-day score of 141. Leavitt is second with 138 and Edward Little of Auburn is fourth with 172.
In the boys Class A meet, Luke Lemanski had the day’s fastest time (1:18.39) and Telstar had the low score in the slalom (58), but Oxford Hills of South Paris slid into the team overall lead with its 72-point total.
Oxford Hills has a two-day score of 123 while Mt. Blue and Edward Little have 131 and Telstar has 156.
Chris Carleton was the fastest skier for Oxford Hills. He finished 10th in 1:23.84.
Matt Maloney of Leavitt skied a 1:20.19 to take second and Brandon Conover earned third with a 1:21.07.
