NEWRY – Several Eastern Maine skiers enjoyed good outings on the first day of the Class B state championship meet at Sunday River Resort Thursday.
Heidi Andrews from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield finished fifth in the giant slalom competition with a combined time of 1:49.60. Teammate Hailey Ingraham (1:54.51) was 13th. Megan Gately of Lake Region was first with a time of 1:43.58.
In boys competition, Matt Gale of Presque Isle finished 15th with a time of 1:35.32. The winner was Brian Cooke of Maranacook with a 1:27.60.
The giant slalom is the first of four events which will determine the state boys and girls team champions. The other events are slalom plus freestyle and classical cross country.

At Augusta, J.T. Woodworth led a balanced attack with 14 points to help the No. 2 Rangers of Kittery advance to the Western Maine Class C final.
Billy Hickman notched 13 points for the winners. Travis Downs and Jamie Finneran each put in 10.
Adam Rich paced the No. 6 Bulldogs with 15 points while Jon Fortin added 14.

Travis Magnusson tossed in a game-high 30 points for the No. 4 Buccaneers of Thomaston. A.J. Staples chipped in with 10.
