I am a home-schooled 11-year-old in the sixth grade and I am writing about the Super Wal-Mart issue.
I disagree with the development of a new Wal-Mart building. A marsh is an abundant habitat for many species of plants and animals, and the one in question is probably one of the only green, fertile spots left on Stillwater Avenue. The size, noise and business of a Super Wal-Mart would have a better chance of driving creatures from their home than anything.
Birds and animals might also become used to stealing food from dumpsters or surrounding litter, which could lead to problems such as animals being less afraid of humans and therefore getting themselves into trouble or could be killed eating or getting tangled up in garbage. Also, heat radiated from the parking lot could dry up and kill the marsh, for moisture in abundance is a key part to the marsh’s survival.
And what would this store have that the other one didn’t – bigger and more departments; things you’d only have to travel a few different roads to find? Save our marshes and wetlands, or rather, their marshes and wetlands, for it belongs more to the animals and earth than anyone else.
