BREWER – Carolyn McAvoy tossed in 11 of her game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to lead the No. 12 Brewer Witches to a 56-45 Class A prelim girls basketball win over No. 13 Waterville Friday night.

Jenny Higgins added 13 points for Brewer, which will play No. 5 Hampden Wednesday. Rachel Wing chipped in with 11 for the winners.

Tracy Nale led the No. 13 Panthers with 15 points.

At Old Town, No. 10 Old Town used a balanced scoring attack to hold off No. 15 Medomak Valley of Waldoboro in a first-round Class A prelim.

Old Town advanced to a second-round prelim against No. 7 Lawrence in Fairfield on Tuesday.

Sarah Metivier paced the winners with 16 points. Mallory Brown turned in a solid all-around effort with 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Renee Thibodeau added 12 points and Kasey Spencer netted 10.

Laura Briggs poured in 21 points for Medomak Valley.

Ashley Monahan scored 11 points for Caribou, which plays Tuesday at No. 6 Messalonskee of Oakland.

Christina Rich scored a game-high 16 points and had eight rebounds for the No. 11 Crusaders. Julie Crotty tallied five assists.

At Bouchard Arena in Brewer, Matt Clark scored two goals and Will Richard another as the No. 11 Bulldogs of Fairfield upset the No. 6 Witches.

Lawrence, 4-17, is scheduled to face No. 3 Bangor on Tuesday at Sawyer Arena.

Clark’s first goal, at the 10:40 mark of the second period, proved to be the winner for Lawrence.

Richard also had an assist, and Chris Warren had a pair of assists. Everett Flannery made 21 saves on 21 shots.

Justin Boober made seven saves on 10 shots for 11-10 Brewer.

Class B skiing

Hoch, Cook post victories

At Newry, Kristy Hoch of South China’s Erskine Academy and Brian Cook from Maranacook in Readfield were the big winners at the Class B state ski championships Friday.

Cook’s combined time of 1:05.03 won the boys slalom title while Hoch’s 1:15.14 took the girls event on the second day of competition.

Several Eastern Maine skiers also had solid efforts. In girls competition, Sarah Beldon of Presque Isle finished third with a time of 1:16.87 and Hailey Ingraham from Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield was fifth at 1:21.77. Presque Isle’s Sarah Gagahan was ninth (1:25.84).

In boys action, Presque Isle’s Zach Smith of was seventh with a time of 1:11.20 and teammate Kyle Hendrickson was ninth (1:12.50). Dave Massey of Camden Hills was 10th overall with a time of 1:12.54.

Competition concludes Saturday with the freestyle and classical cross country races.
