Robbins sparks Old Town Brewer, Cony record first-round wins in Class A prelims

OAKLAND – Jason Robbins scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth period, including the game-winner in the lane with under 10 seconds to play to lead the Old Town Indians to a 61-60 Class A prelim win over the Messalonskee Eagles Saturday.

The No. 11 Eagles were ahead by as many as 18 points in the third quarter until No. 15 Old Town cut it to 12 at the end of the quarter. Messalonskee led by eight with about 1:40 to play in the fourth, and the Indians didn’t allow a single point the rest of the way.

Shawn Kenniston was Old Town’s top scorer with 23 points. Adam Mahaney totaled 13.

Brandon Sperry led the Eagles with 18 points while Dave Brooks and Steve York added 11 each.

At Waldoboro, Jared Cushman poured in 21 points to lead the No. 13 Rams of Augusta to a first-round prelim win in overtime.

Shawn Gallagher totaled 18 points for the winners, who trailed by nine points entering the fourth quarter. Gallagher hit three 3-pointers, including the game-tying basket with 33 seconds to play.

The Panthers missed a shot at the buzzer, and the game went to overtime. Cushman was 13 of 18 from the foul line, and he hit seven of those free throws in overtime. Ryan Beer had four of his eight points in the extra session. The Rams will play Nokomis of Newport next.

Chad Benner was the Panthers leading scorer with 15 points while Anthony Lufkin added 14.

At Presque Isle, Chad Robertson scored the winning basket with four seconds remaining in the game, leading the No. 11 Wildcats to the win in a first-round Class A prelim.

Robertson picked up a loose ball from a scramble and then scored off an eight-foot jump hook.

Nick Casavant paced the winners with 17 points.

For No. 14 Hampden Academy, Justin DiFrederico scored 10 points.

At Augusta, Dirigo was able to hold Jay in overtime and win the Western Maine Class C title.

Michele Gagnon scored 14 for the Cougars of Dixfield while Lyndsey Clark had 13.

For Jay, Randi Boivin netted 16 while Karyn Labbe and Carla Labbe each added 11. Labbe also recorded 16 rebounds and six steals.

At Bouchard Arena in Brewer, Greg Taylor scored twice in the first minute to spark the No. 8 Broncos’ preliminary win over the No. 9 Huskies.

Hampden faces No. 1 Orono at 8:10 p.m. Wednesday in a quartefinal game at Sawyer Arena in Bangor.

Taylor tallied 15 seconds into the game and added his second 32 seconds later. He finished with three goals and an assist.

Jeff Mayhew topped the Hampden scoring parade with four goals and an assist, Patrick Bailey added two goals and an assist, Adam Stanley had a goal and two assists, and Karl Moser posted a goal and four assists.

Sean Tardif and Brendan Morrell contributed three assists apiece, and Peter Macone had two.

Goalie Julian Kaelin made 13 saves on 14 shots for 10-9 Hampden.

Chris Dumas scored the lone goal for 5-8 Kents Hill, and Nick Hussey made 34 saves on 45 shots.

Stearns 3, Messalonskee 2

At Sukee Arena in Winslow, Justin Cummings scored the winning goal for Stearns with 54 seconds remaining in the game. Cummings also had an assist.

Matt Michaud had a goal and an assist while Kyle Bouchard had a goal. Devin Pelkey and Steve Rolfe recorded assists. Nick Simon made 28 saves on 30 shots.

Matt Bolduc and Jeff Hague each scored unassisted goals for Messalonskee while Ben Conti faced 27 shots and stopped 24.
