MDI’s Gott nets Osborne Award Martin, Marble choices in C, D

Less than 24 hours before the Mount Desert Island girls were to take the Bangor Auditorium floor for their semifinal game in the Eastern Maine Class B tournament, senior Melissa Gott was in a Bar Harbor restaurant when she felt sick and blacked out. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance and finally went home at 10 p.m., still unsure about what had made her feel so awful.

But Gott pulled together quickly. She scored 20 points against Camden Hills Wednesday and later in the week led the Trojans to their first regional championship since 1997.

Gott averaged 15.3 points and 11 rebounds over the course of three tournament games, for which she has been named the 2001 Bangor Daily News’ Owen Osborne Most Valuable Player for the Eastern Maine Class B tournament.

Juniors Lanna Martin of Calais and Ashley Marble of Woodland were named the Class C and Class D MVPs, respectively. Both girls were all-tourney picks in previous years and Martin was the MVP in 1999.

The MVP award was established in 1994 in memory of Osborne, a former NEWS sports editor and reporter. The award and all-tourney teams, which are listed below by classification, are selected by a vote of media, tournament personnel and representatives of the Maine Principals’ Association.

Gott, Martin and Marble all helped their teams earn Eastern Maine championships at the Bangor Auditorium Saturday.

CLASS B – Gott, a 6-foot-1 center who was on the Class B all-tourney team last year, faced constant double- and triple-teams in the tournament but still managed to lead the Trojans in scoring and rebounding.

This year, Gott’s sister Shelley got noticed as well.

Sophomore Shelley Gott averaged 14.3 points per tourney game and went 9-for-16 (56.2 percent) from 3-point range over the three EM games.

Foxcroft Academy 6-footer Amy Kelley, who shared scoring and rebounding duties with Leslie Glover, averaged 13.6 points and 12.6 rebounds over three games.

Camden Hills junior Lauren Withey carried the defending Class B state champions into the semifinals. She averaged 26.5 points and nine rebounds in two tourney games.

Donna Cowing of Erskine Academy in South China, one of the top scorers in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference, scored at a 25.5-clip in the Eagles’ quarterfinal win and semifinal loss.

CLASS C – Martin and teammate Katie Frost have been a part of the all-tourney team ever since they were freshmen.

Martin was honorable mention last year. This year she averaged 17.6 points per tourney game; her best all-around effort came in the quarterfinal against Searsport in which she racked up 21 points, 14 rebounds, seven steals, three blocks and three assists.

Frost averaged 16.3 points in the tourney, including a 20-point effort in the semifinal against Stearns of Millinocket.

Mattanawcook of Lincoln’s Cassie Carver, an honorable mention last year, led the Lynx to the regional final for the first time with 14 points per game.

Stearns of Millinocket’s Shena Pineau came off the bench in the quarterfinal game and scored 26 points to spark the Minutemen. She scored 12 in the semifinal.

Megan Russell had to pick up for Penquis of Milo because of illness to other players. Nevertheless she was the player to stop for the Patriots with 16 points in the quarterfinal win and 14 in a semifinal loss.

CLASS D – Marble and teammate Julia Knights were named to the all-tourney team for the third year in a row (Woodland was a Class C school in 1999).

Marble may have been the most athletic player in the tournament. She averaged 23 points in the Dragons’ three games and scored 34 in the Eastern Maine final.

Knights was Woodland’s second-leading scorer with 14 points per game. She had 12 rebounds in the EM final.

Shead of Eastport’s Sara Ricker is now a member of three all-tourney teams (she was the MVP two years ago and an honorable mention last year). The senior guard racked up 73 points in three games for a 24.3 average, highest among the all-tourney team members who played in three games.

Tigerettes’ freshman Samantha Davis showed plenty of promise. She backed up Ricker offensively with 10.6 points per game.

Amanda Godley, a 5-9 sophomore center, led seventh-seeded East Grand of Danforth to the semifinals with 26 points in two games.
